If you are thinking about installing a water filtration system in your home or already have, you should be aware that the filters will need changed on a periodic basis. Water filtration filters have different life spans depending on what kind they are. Some last a few months, others last substantially longer. When shopping for your filtration system, check the packaging or item details to see what kind of filters the system requires and how often you need to change the filter.

Water filter systems can be purchased online and in hardware and home improvement stores. There are many different kinds. For example, there are well water filters that help clean water that comes from a well or other source. Most people just need something for their faucet to purify their drinking water. In this case you can choose from the countertop models, faucet models and under the sink models. It really depends how often you care to change the filter, how much you use the faucet and what your budget is. Some filtration systems are cheap and others are quite expensive. For your household, you don't need to spend much (as long as you are not using well water.)

Speaking of price, this is also the case with the filters themselves. Some filters are not very expensive and others are. It depends on the type of filtration system you have installed. Before purchasing a filtration system, check the price of replacement filters. If it seems too expensive to replace them then go with a lower priced model. Also, looking for filtration systems with filters that last a long time can cut back on filter replacement costs. Some systems come with calendar stickers to remind you while others have indicators on them.

Water filtration filters should be changed as directed on the instructions, otherwise you will not be getting the clean, fresh water you want. There are some filters to which you can add pre-filters, for example if you have a charcoal filter and want extra protection against sediment there are sediment pre-filters. The water is run through the pre-filter before being run through the main filter for a second level of purification. Whether or not you need one of these secondary filters depends on your water quality, and whether or not sediment in the water is an issue.
